Chauvin Derek apologizes to George Flyod as he gets sentenced to 22.5 years in prison

Former Minneapolis Police department officer Chauvin Derek has been sentenced to 22 and a half years for killing George Floyd in May last year in the streets of Minneapolis.

Chauvin spoke briefly before his sentence was read and offered his “condolences to the Floyd Family”

Judge Peter Cahill who wrote the 22 page memorandum said that the two factors are the ones that warranted such a harsher sentence which included the fact that Chauvin “abused his position of trust or authority” and treated Floyd with cruelty and without any respect. The judge also wrote that Chauvin denied Floyd all the dignity owed to all human beings.

The Judge however was quick to note that the sentence was not inspired by the emotions and public opinion but rather the rule of law.

“Mr. Chauvin’s prolonged restraint of Mr. Floyd was also much longer and more painful than the typical scenario in a second-degree or third-degree murder or second-degree manslaughter case,” the judge wrote.

Floyd was killed last year in May in a gruesome manner after a brutal arrest where police officer Derek Chauvin assisted by two policemen placed his knee on Floyd’s neck, chocking him to death.

In a 9 Minutes video recorded by a 17 year old boy, Floyd is seen begging for mercy as he tells the police officers that he can’t breathe and cried out calling his mum as he breathed his last.

His death sparked off protests throughout the US and the whole world.

Following Minnesota law, Derek will serve two thirds of the sentence which is 15 years and will be eligible for a supervised release for the remaining seven and a half years.

George Floyd case is one of several recorded cases of police brutality in the United States against people of color especial racial blacks and Latinos.

The sentence of Derek has given people who are fighting against police brutality a ray of hope.
