Huawei Executive Meng Wanzhou freed after 3 Years of Detention in Canada

Canada has released and repatriate the executive of Huawei Meng Wanzhou who was arrested in Canada in 2018 on request of the United States as she was being accused of fraud.

Her release follows a deal reached on by Chinese and US diplomats, a deal whose content is still a subject of speculation.

US Department of Justice has called off the extradition request that was submitted by the Trump administration requesting Canada to extradite Meng to be tried in the US.

The US alleged Ms Meng misled the bank HSBC over the true nature of Huawei’s relationship with a company called Skycom, putting the bank at risk of violating US sanctions against Iran.

The arrest of Meng Wanzhou soured diplomatic relations between China and Canada with China reaching an extent of detaining several Canadian citizens in retaliation though the Beijing government denied allegations.

Having pleaded not guilty on several counts of fraud, Wanzhou was freed and boarded Air China as she headed to Shenzhen city of China.

“My life has been turned upside down. It was a disruptive time for me,” Ms Meng told reporters after being freed from Canadian detention.

A few hours after her release, China also released Canada citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Koyrig who had spent more than 1000 days in Chinese detention and will be returning to Canada.
