Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls have permanently signed Uganda Midfielder Steven Sserwadda from New York Redbulls II.
The 19 year old Ugandan International 19 year old player was unveiled today on July 9, 2022 by the Major League Soccer team which is currently second in the Eastern Conference.
Sserwadda joined joined New York Red Bulls II in 2021 from Kampala Capital City Authority FC KCCA where he has since then played in 14 United States Championship matches 10 of the being in the current season amassing a total of 862 minutes.
After a short loan to New York Red Bulls, he impressed the technical team of NYRB signing him on a permanent contract.
“Steven is a dynamic young player that we have seen develop during his time with New York Red Bulls II and we are excited to add him to our roster,” said Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “In his time with the club, we have seen the promising qualities he possesses, and we are looking forward to having him on the field with us.”
Sserwadda has made three appearances on International Level with Uganda his debut game being the Uganda Vs Tajikistan match in Navruz Cup on March 25th 2022.
During his short loan at New York Red bulls, Sserwadda made his debut on the team in US Open Cup in the Quarter finals match against New York City FC on 23rd June which NYRB won with 3 – 0. He made his Major League Debut on 30th June vs Atlanta United FC which Red Bulls went on to win with 2-1.
For his performance, he has been described as ‘very exciting’and able to ‘succeed at the MLS Level’ by the NYRB head coach Gerhard Struber.
“What we’ve seen from Steven over the last couple months has been very exciting,” said Head Coach Gerhard Struber. “He fits into our style of play, and we have seen that in his appearances over the last month and believe that he can succeed at the MLS level.”
Born and raised in Kampala, Sserwadda Steven started his Youth career in 2015 at KCCA FC where he was promoted the the senior team in 2018. He managed to win the Uganda Cup and Uganda Premier League trophy while at KCCA. He was part of the Ugandan U20 team that reached on the finals of 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations where he scored two goals in the group stages.
