On their third appearance in the Euros, Austria finally got their first win in the European Championship after outwitting debutants North Macedonia 3:1. They had gone six matches without a win in their last two Euro appearances.

Stefan Lainer opened the scoring in the 18th minute with an assist from Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch doubled the lead with 12 minutes to play. Thanks to an assist from Real Madrid’s new signing David Alaba.

Senior player Goran Pandev 37, who was making his 120th appearance for Euro debutants North Macedonia had levelled matters for his side but that didn’t stay longer as Michael Gregoritsch restored Austria’s lead.

It was former Westham winger Marko Arnautović who put the icing on the cake for Austria who won their first match at a major tournament since 1990 when they beat USA 2:1 in the World Cup hosted by Italy.

In the other match played earlier on in the day, England, also Known as the ‘Three Lions’ overcame a resilient Croatia side to win 1:0. Thanks to a goal from Raheem Sterling in the 57th minute off an assist from Kalvin Phillips.

It gives boost to the England squad who are yarning for a first European title and only second major title since the World Cup win of 1966.

England got the ultimate revenge on Croatia who they lost to in the 2018 World Cup and now playing at home, Wembley, gives them more morale. Their only World Cup was won when they hosted the tournament in 1966 and their last best performance came in 1996 when they hosted the Euro tournament and made it to the Semi Finals.

England host Scotland at Wembley on Friday, 18 June at 10PM whereas Croatia will play the Czech Republic at Hampden Park on the same day.
