Russia Congragulates Museveni on Winning the Elections

Russia has hailed ‘the successful general election in the friendly Uganda, which has proved broad national support for the [NRM] government”, according to a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The Sunday statement partly read:
Moscow hails the successful general election in the friendly Uganda, which have proved broad national support for the government’s course towards stable political and socio-economic development.”
The statement further hailed President Museveni’s victory indicating that African election observers had “noted a generally open and peaceful nature of the election campaign and the voting process…”
Russia, a former Cold War super power, has in the recent past cozied up to Kampala against the backdrop of President Museveni’s continued attacks on European countries and the US, accusing them of “arrogance” and “meddling in internal affairs of other countries.”
The plaudits from the Kremlin came on the heels of a stark statement from the US chastising Thursday’s polls as “deeply inconsistent with international standards.” Washington’s statement maintained that Ugandans ‘deserved better’.
Museveni won Thursday’s poll characterised by delayed arrival of voting materials and ensuing chaos with 60.75% of the valid votes at the time the declaration was made.
