President Museveni orders URA to remove taxes on drugs

President Museveni has directed Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to relinquish tax on drugs and scholastic materials in the country.
The president said relinquishing of tax will create an opportunity for private institutions to instead use the money to expand their investment hence create more employment opportunities.
The president said this in response to the concern earlier raised by health minister Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye regarding tax exemption on such commodities.
The minister said taxing of these commodities has created a risk to organizations and asked the president to intervene so that the practice does not paralyze the activities curried out by private organizations.
The president was speaking during the launch of western region pharmaceutical warehouse established by Joint Medical Stores in Mbarara Municipality.
Hon Elioda Tumwesigye said decentralizing medical stores will not only bring services nearer to the people but will also reduce the costs of running the hospitals in the region, which are currently getting drugs from Kampala
