The Chairperson of Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) Joel Ssenyonyi has reportedly received threats from Cabinet Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Tom Butime who is warning him to stop probing the appointment of embattled Uganda Airlines C.E.O Jennifer Bamuturaki.
Ssenyonyi’s COSASE has been in limelight this week exposing the loopholes in the appointment of Jennifer Bamuturaki as the CEO of Uganda National Airlines who was appointed last month in July on ‘Orders from Above’.
According to her own confessions, she was appointed without applying for the job and she had no post graduate which was one of the pre-requisites to get the job.
She further confessed to having never received transcript in as much as she claims she graduated in 1994, Bachelors of Social Works and Social Administration (SWASA) at Makerere University. Her S.4 pass slip was lost and she can’t trace where it is.
In the recorded voice call, Retired Colonel Hon. Tom Butime who is a relative of Bamuturaki asked Ssenyonyi to desist from probing Jennifer Bamuturaki or else face the consequences. Butime is also a former Mwenge County Central, Kyenjojo District Member of Parliament.
Joel Ssenyonyi who is MP Nakawa West Constituency and Spokesperson of Uganda’s largest opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has vowed not to back down and has promised to continue doing his job as the Chairperson COSASE and probing whoever needs probing.
He further says that he reported the case to Police and submitted to them the recordings of a phone call between him and Minister Tom Butiime.
“Yesterday, I got a call from Tourism Minister Tom Butime, threatening & intimidating me over Uganda Airlines probe,bse apparently Jennifer Bamuturaki is his relative. I’ve reported this at CPS,Ref GEF 60/2022 for it to be on record. No one,I repeat,no one will cause me to back down.” Joel Ssenyonyi said.
Yesterday, three of the MPs on he COSASE who asked for anonymity told Uganda Radio Network that they are receiving death threats however did not go ahead to disclose details.
