IGP Offers Free Transport To Stranded Students From School

Uganda Police Force has today continued to offer free transport to stranded students caught up   in bus and Tax Parks of Kampala due to increased transport fees resulting from partial lockdown as they are rushing from schools.

This was organised by IGP for all stranded students around Taxi Parks in Kampala yesterday night.

‘‘The IGP has organised transport for all stranded students around all Taxi Parks in Kampala, exercise still on.’’ Owoyesigyire tweeted.

Curfew for busses and taxis travelling upcountry was also suspended until Thursday 10th June 2021.

According to the Minister Of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine, this is to aid the movement of students from schools.

Students were given up to June 10th,  2021 to vacate their schools after the President suspended learning for all institutions and schools for 42days.

However, as the number of student increased in Kampala Bus Park, Uganda Police Force came out to rescue students by offering them free transport means using police buses especially those from far places.

Today, 9th/06/2021 the police officially announced that the free transport of students caught up due to the partial lockdown still continues.

‘‘We would like to further inform the public that the free transportation of students caught up due to the partial lockdown still continues’’, the Uganda Police Force tweeted.

The police drivers transported students along the Northern, Eastern, South Western, Western, North Western and the Karamoja routes. They transported them in 6 police buses and 20 trucks and safely delivered them in their home districts. We greatly thank the drivers, police escorts and the entire coordinating team for the wonderful job. No incidents were registered during the transportation process.  They added.

The teams are also transporting other stranded students from upcountry stations back to Kampala and other districts, on their way back. The safe delivery of all stranded students who are vulnerable during this trying period of the pandemic remains a priority.

We want to thank the IGP and his leadership for this very positive initiative.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during his Sunday national address on COVID19 allowed Private vehicles to move within districts and banned them from inter-district travels.

Meanwhile, all stakeholders in the public transport sector are reminded that the deadline for public transportation is 10.06.2021. Our enforcement on public transport will commence on the 11.06.2021 and we urge you all to abide by the guidelines of the 42 day partial lockdown.
