Hunger in Karamoja as thousands face Starvation

Hundreds of thousands of families in Karamoja are spending a day without having a meal in the worst food crisis that has hit Karamoja Sub region.

Photos of starving Karamoja people have been making rounds on social media as thousands of people in Karamoja are on a verge of starvation.

According to Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) published on May 30, a total of 518,000 people which is 41% of the entire population in the sub-region are facing acute high levels of food insecurity.

Kaabong, Kotido and Moroto are the most affected districts with each district having 50% of its population having high level insecurity followed by Nabilatuk which stands at 40%.

Of these 518,000 people, 428,000 are experiencing phase three – crisis levels of insecurity and 90,000 at phase four (Emergency Levels of Food insecurity).

Climate change, impact of COVID-19 and increase of food prices are some of the various causes that have been identified to have fueled this food crisis.
