Forum for Democratic Change has called for thorough investigations concerning the death of Uganda Christian University Student Bewatte Betungura, 27, a Law student who was stabbed and killed during Makerere University Guild President Campaign rallies yesterday.
Betungura had travelled to Makerere University to support his Mbarara High School Old Student and a friend Tukamushaba Justus who is contesting for the post of Guild President Makerere University on FDC Ticket.
A scuffle happened when a group belonging to the camp of National Unity Platform blocked the FDC’s Tukamushaba Justus Procession that was heading to the final rally at Makerere University Rugby Ground.
The incident left students on both sides injured while Betungura stabbed to death.
“Bewatte was stabbed yesterday evening, in a scuffle that ensued when Tukamushaba Justus’s procession was blocked and denied access by the NUP supporters and leaders present, at the Muk Rugby Grounds for our final campaign rally.” FDC said in a statement
Police has already arrested NUP’s Hon. Kabuye Frank who is Kassanda South MP and also Shadow Minister for Youths and Children Affairs. Ssekidde Allan and Kabuurwa Muzafaru are also detained to help police in carrying out investigations.
Makerere University has already suspended Guild President Elections in the wake of the campaigns marred by violence.
Betungura will be buried tomorrow at his ancestral home in Kamwenge District, Western Uganda.
