5 days since Betungura Bewatte a 27 year law student at Uganda Christian University was murdered during the final rallies of Makerere University Guild Campaigns, Police continues to unmask the circumstances surrounding his death and the perpetrators who were not only responsible for his death but the entire chaos.
According to Police spokesperson, Betungura was hit with a glass bottle from which its piece cut his throat leading to bleeding and causing trauma due to excessive force that was used.
Police says that he was attacked near Nsibirwa Hall Junction and was rushed to Nsibirwa Hall Bathrooms where he was later picked and rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police described the cause of death as hemorrhagic shock which was due to sharp force trauma.
Enanga confirmed the arrest and detainment of Kassanda South MP Frank Kabuye, Ssekiddde Allan and Kabuurwa Muzafaru who are yet to be arraigned in court on charges of inciting violence.
“So far, 3 suspects who include; Hon. Kabuye Frank, MP Kassanda, Ssekiddde Allan and Kabuurwa Muzafaru, are being charged to court, with incitement to violence, as we consolidate the facts surrounding the brutal murder of the victim.” Said Enanga in a statement.
According to National Unity Platform statement, Hon. Frank Kabuye, Allan and Muzafaru were the good Samaritans who rushed Bewatte to the hospital to help him access medical care and were arrested after found next to him the hospital.
“It was a few minutes later that news started coming in that a student had been stabbed and was at Nsibirwa Hall. There were calls for help for the student who was bleeding profusely and needed urgent medical attention. Hon. Frank Kabuye was amongst the first responders, and since he had a vehicle, he immediately came in to help.” NUP said in a statement released on July 15th.
Police says that they have collected evidence inform of eye witnesses, security cameras to help identify those who caused the chaos and those responsible for murder of Bewatte, confirming that all those responsible arrested and produced in courts of law.
“The CCTV footages, other video footages and accounts from witnesses have enabled us to generate lists of perpetrators to the violence.” Police said in a statement.
Police further highlighted the role of student brigade bodies who are hired by candidates to campaign or act as bodyguards of candidates marking them as some of the root cause of chaos.
Brigades include the NRA – North Coat Revolutionary which was guarding Tukamushaba Justus of FDC, which the deceased was also part, The RGB – RAT Guard Brigade that was guarding NU Candidate apparently said to be the one that started chaos while the OGB – Oxeleble Guard Brigade was guarding the NRM candidate.
Betungura Bewatte was buried on July 16th, in Biguli Town Coucil, Kamwenge District.
