The former Forum for Democratic Change President and presidential aspirant Dr Kizza Besigye who was arrested a few weeks ago being accused of treason has been restricted on the number of visitors he is to get so as to give chance to other prisoners to also be visited according to the Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine that only a maximum of 20 visitors per day will be allowed for Besigye.
The decision, he says was prompted by the high number of people who have been turning up to see the opposition leader and retired colonel and since they have been receiving more than 60 people per day seeking to see Besigye, which he says this is a very huge number of visitors for one person at a facility that holds more than 4,000 inmates so they had to restrict them.
Baine says that the huge number is not only a hindrance to the prison activities but also affects the visitation of other inmates since they also need to be attended too.
Besigye was remanded to Luzira prison until June 1 by the Nakawa chief magistrates court on May 18 after being charged afresh with treason after having sworn himself in as the ‘people’s president’ contrary to the February 18 presidential election results in which the Electoral Commission announced President Museveni winner with 60 percent against Besigye’s 34 percent and the Supreme court ruling that upheld Museveni’s reelection.
