Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United: Lingard goal cancelled out by Diego Costa

Manchester United were minutes away from a first win over Chelsea in nine but were denied by Diego Costa’s stoppage-time equaliser.
Jesse Lingard’s slick finish gave United a deserved lead in Louis van Gaal’s fourth game managing The Reds against Chelsea, where he watched his side start productively but fail to breach Thibaut Courtois’ goal in the first-half.
United had nine corners in the first 45 as the agile Belgian goalkeeper denied a delicate Anthony Martial curler. Chelsea rallied after a somnolent start and were furious not to be awarded a penalty when John Terry’s shot hit Daley Blind’s arm before the half-time shrill.
Courtois tipped a Lingard curler around the post shortly after the pause and soon passed the four-hour mark without conceding against United. Seconds later, the ebullient Cameron Borthwick-Jackson crossed for Lingard to control, swivel and lash the ball into the net to leave United supporters in the Shed End writhing with delight.

The reverse fixture in December was dominated by the Premier League’s best goalkeepers and David de Gea protected United’s lead with smart stops from Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas.
Van Gaal brought on Morgan Schneiderlin to protect United’s lead but it merely invited pressure. The dam burst when the other substitute – Memphis – instigated a Chelsea counter-attack that culminated in Diego Costa evading the offside trap to level.
Then, at the death, De Gea thwarted Costa with an alert stop.
United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson, Carrick, Fellaini (Schneiderlin), Mata (Herrera), Lingard (Memphis), Martial, Rooney
