Carrefour takes over operations of Shoprite Supermarkets

Supermarket Carrefour is taking over six stores that are currently operated by the South African supermarket stores company Shoprite.

The branches being taken over include Shoprite Acacia Mall, Village Mall, Victoria Lugogo Mall, Clock Tower (Ben Kiwanuka) and the newly opened Arena Mall.

The deal comes after the Supermarket chain Shoprite announced that they are closing operations in two African markets Uganda and Madagascar.

The lease agreement increases the presence of Carrefour in Uganda, a French company whose franchise is held by the UAE based Majid Al Futtaim.

“We welcome the opportunity to bring our unique Carrefour offering of unbeatable value, range, international standards to more customers across Uganda,” said Hani Weiss, the chief executive of Majid Al Futtaim Retail, in a statement.

Carrefour currently owns two stores in Uganda and the takeover Shoprite Operations increases its presence to 8 stores as the company sets itself as one of the leading retailers in East Africa.

Carrefour Uganda says they retail in over 20,000 products of which 98% of these products are locally sourced and have vowed to continue supporting local producers.
